Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta

Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta are not typical people form their time, or so I assume. Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta (especially him) travelled all over Asia, parts of Europe, and parts of Africa. Most people did trade, but it wasn't all over the place like how they did. They just went to one place then back, not everywhere in the world.

For our time, however, Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta's travels would be considered normal. People today can go wherever they want, no matter how far, and it doesn't look suspicious; it's normal to travel everywhere. Buisness people have to travel for work, and many other people travel for work, for pleasure, and for a vacation.

Crusades Project!

Hey, this is Sam…Sam Hovasse if you’re wondering and for this project I’m going to be explaining the Third Crusade, the Fourth Crusade, and the Children’s Crusade, along with picture that I think would represent the Muslims reactions to each of the crusades.

So let’s start with the Third Crusade shall we?

The Third Crusade was from 1182 and lasted until 1192. The Muslims were in control of Jerusalem at the start with Saladin as their leader. There three other guys that wanted to take over Jerusalem. There was Barbarossa from Germany, Philip Augustus from France, and Richard the Lionheart from England. Does Philip and Richard the Lionheart’s name sound familiar? Well Robin Hood was loosely based off of this crusade…not really, but they have the same people! Anyways, they all wanted Jerusalem and started heading for it. But sadly, Barbarossa was crossing a river and he fell from his horse and drowned and his men all went back to Germany. How sad. Germany was taken down by a river. Then Philip, well Philip hates Richard and so Philip backs out to take over England and Richard goes on. Richard and Saladin fight for a while and when it’s clear that the fighting is useless they draw up a treaty that allows Christians to go into Jerusalem without paying a tribute.

Now we move to the Fourth Crusade. Ok, so this crusade is a bit different. Instead of kings there is a pope in charge of this one. And that pope is Pope Innocent the III. He wanted the crusaders to rid the land of infidels…aka the Muslims. So the Crusaders go south and discover that they needed boats. They go to Venice for help. They say “Sure, if you go take out our competitor you can have all the boats that you want!.” So the crusaders take out the city of Zara…which was a Christian city…Upon hearing this, the pope is furious and excommunicates them. But the Crusaders don’t really care…they use their boats to go to Constantinople and sack the city. The pope is pleased by this act and takes them back in.

And the last crusade I will be talking about is the Children’s Crusade. As you can guess, this crusade involves children. It happened in 1212 and according to my sources, they were kids from France, one of them was a boy named Stephan and he was proclaimed “leader”. There were a lot of other kids that decided to follow with him to try and take Jerusalem, but along the way, many of them decided to either stop or go back. Those that moved on had some trouble finding a boat when they stopped in Brindisi, and when they did they found that they were tricked seeing as the boat landed in Africa and the kids were sold into slavery. And that was the end of that Crusade.

Wrap up Blog before Final Post

So this post is going to be long and meaty. This is what I should have been adding along the way but more in detail:

I personally like google more becasue the search engine I've always used, but any search engine will do.
I've chosen to do a showme becasue I wanted to incorporate pictures, and I can't really do that if I'm video taping myself. The only other problem was that if I did video tape myself I would have to dress up like a Muslim and I didn't want to offend anyone or anything like that so the showme will save me from A. embarrassment and B. being disrespectful. This is going a lot different that I expected. At first it looked really hard and then it got easier..but now it's back to being hard! I hope I'll finish this project soon becasue I have to rewrite my script about the crusades a little bit and then find pictures and then do the showme. Wish me luck and hopefull this will turn out good!

And the pictures are going to show the Muslims' reactions if you're wondering.My voice will just talk about the crusades.

Day 3 and 4

Sorry, my post for Day 3 didn't get posted! Apparently there was an interuption(?).

Anyways, I made my script for what I'm going to say, I'm going to video tape it tomorrow and then upload it to youtube, then tada! The project will be done and I won't have to worry about it ever again.

Day 2 of the Project

So today Mr. Whitten gave us the list of all of the crusades. I know I'm definitely doing the one with Richard the Lion-heart and then I have some others that I would like to do but I just have to narrow down my choices, which I will do tomorrow. We have an in-class essay to do tomorrow so I'm going to prepare for that essay tonight and do most of the project tomorrow so I can devote my time to studying.

Day 1 of the project

Not sure exactly about this project and what to do...
But I know that I'm going to do a video and I'm going to impersonate being a Muslim and rant about each of the crusades. I have not picked out which ones I would like to do yet (that would be tomorrow's homework for me). For sources and finding sources, I know I'm going to use the textbook and google. More to come tomorrow!

Map of Africa

The textbook company omitted a lot of useful information the map. One of the reasons they probably did this was because of the time, money, and effort it would have cost. Textbook companies don't have time, they have so many other things to do and print out so many other textbooks and they only have a certain amount of money to spent on certain textbooks to fit their budget. Another reason would be to make students read the book more carefully. It's a pain for e students, but the information is in the reading so no learning is lost. However, it also gives teachers an activity to do in class, which was the same thing we did today in class, which was making the students read the book and make a new map, which is interactive and helped my understanding of everything going on in Africa with the kingdoms, cities, and trade. The impact of the omissions is that learning is now hard, meaning that Africa is empty. And to get the knowledge of everything else, you have to read rather than see it. But redoing the map impacts the students and people seeing the map better because it shows everything going on helping our understanding and it shows the complexity of Africa.

My Story

I believe that my life's story should be completed in a book or a song. When I mean book, I mean a collection of my diary or something. Anything that I have written myself, and what no one else has touched. I don't want anyone else to have a say in my story becasue no one knows myself better than I do. I mean there could a section on what other people think and could say, but the majority should be me writing about myself and my thoughts for the events that have happened in my life. If a book is impossible to achieve, then a song will do. I love to sing anyways so a song would be pretty good. Songs are more memorable and will last for a long time. Books however,last longer in the sense that they are preserved, but not necessarily known by many people. Songs are more popular in this day and age. But a book and a song about myself doesn't sound to bad either. Have the book about my life and the song about a particular event. However, if someone else wrote a book about me, I would have to read it first before it was ever published or read by any other person. I don't want anyone writing things about me that are not good.
